Should Music Be Played In The Workplace?

There are many arguments for and against playing music in the workplace. Many people believe that its too distracting and that it takes the hinders the ability to focus on work. Others think that it can actually improve focus and thus productivity.

There have been many studies carried out which cite that music can help improve concentration, but only music of a certain kind. Music that is slow paced, relaxed and instrumental can help someone to focus on a job that requires a deal of concentration. Jobs such as bookwork and accounting.

However it’s common knowledge that music that’s loud, grating and distinctly uncharacteristic with the work that is being done, will be distracting. An example of this can include loud rock music around a workplace that carries out slow methodical tasks such as factories or warehouses.

There is also the fact that any music played in a workplace requires a licence. This can be costly and may offset the financial advantages that music would otherwise bring.
